Good work. Might as well finish the bike off nice and clean and sell it your mate for abit more than 30 pounds :-)

There was also a cracked thin nut on the RHS, outside of a 1/8" spacing washer. I'm pretty sure you don't meed a locknut on the RHS as it has the lock washer on top of the cone so God knows what it was doing there. not sure how this nut got split or why it was ever thereOne the nut was filed it came off quite easily and there were no stripped threads on the axle. correction: just checked the Sturmey Archer schematic for the AW hub and it shows there should be a locknut on both sides, outside of the spacing washer. Despite the damage I don't think this bike has been messed around with. You can find all sorts of missing/extra washers/nuts on bikes that have been tinkered with.

Thanks guys. Going back to the title of this thread there is a similar Grifter on Ebay just now which seems to be missing a wheel and the bids are up at £37! so maybe I should've put more thought into this one before selling it. As I said earlier I was short of parts for a Bomber project and at short notice got the chance to buy 2 Bombers (1 in bits) for £50 on the condition I took all the guy's other bikes away. There were 7 in total but he allowed me to leave 2 behind (modern MTB and a tiny BMX thing) and I left with the 2 Bombers, 1 Grifter, 1 RSW & a Mongoose Villain BMX. The day cost me just shy of £100 (£50 - bikes/£30 - petrol/£18 - lunch) so all I wanted to do was get rid of everything I didn't need and get my money back. £30 for the Grifter pays for the gas and I sold the Mongoose for £20 today which covers lunch. Next to go hopefully will be a 1968 Raleigh RSW so I'm getting towards the £0 target
