Needed to address the problem of the brake stay sheath (or lack of, as the original ones had perished). Now I know these are still available to buy for only a few pounds but I didn't want the hassle of ordering a set of tiny rubber tubes when I have a perfectly good amount of rubber electrical cable sheathing in the shed, so my improvising (and tight fistedness) skills have come into play again. Scissors, sheathing, and brake stay...
et voila.... a little fairy liquid and a tiny amount of heat and I have one sheathed stay

That's the way to do it. I used a brake cable outer to do mine :-)

I still think the rivets let it down though!

I still think the rivets let it down though! At least you're honest The problem is I need to use rivets to hold my 'modified' flaps in place, I am however going to fill the tiny hole in the centre of the rivet with a dab of filler, nib it down flush, and paint them black, that way they'll look almost identical to the original fixings.

I'm always honest mark and never sugar coat anything! Great idea filling in the rivets. Your bike is looking great.

Well after almost 5 months!!!! It's finished, it was a lot harder than I anticipated especially sourcing parts, but worth it in the end. (Note: the blue tie-wraps are temporary) Many thanks to the guys on here who have helped me with this project, you know who you are. Respect. Photos:

Wow beautiful mate. I understand why you have used some non original parts as there expensive and hard to find. What's your plans? are you going to ride it? are you going to slowly replace the non original parts and get a chainguard? You really did do a great job with the mudflaps and I'm loving the 1978 raleigh grifter restoration project logo. Great work there mark.
